P. J. Wilson 's writing carries the accent of an Appalachian storyteller. Taking up this tradition of oral history she strives for stories to be told aloud. Her favorite means of communication is poetry, essay, and memoir. Over the last 30 years she has been published in various periodicals. Her interest has always been in things of the earth — horses, farming, and food.
Food — the growing, preparation, and preserving — are all part of the Appalachian culture. So it was only natural that she would want to add to this store of knowledge, as well as passing it along. Eating Local in Virginia is her first non-fiction book.
About Eating Local in Virginia she states, “This book is a guide for anyone who has ever wondered how to find truly fresh and local foods. It is a manifesto for individuals who simply want to eat healthy as well as for those who want to change our food system entirely. It is a stated fact that by eating in our own communities we can change our local economy for the better. Restaurants who serve local foods not only care more about the welfare of their customers but also put far more into local economies than other establishments who might tend to deplete local economies.”
